Dhaka in Human Chain

The internationally acclaimed micro finance leader Muhammad Yunus and nine other directors file petitions for the continuation of Yunus’ post as the managing director at GB. Many international micro finance organizations and scholars showed their support for Yunus. However, the biggest support came from the States. Yunus as a Nobel Prize Winner, Medal of Freedom Winner and Congressional Gold Medal Winner is an important person for the US government. While the international community is watching the situation closely, several demonstrations have been taking place across the city. Many people are afraid that the recent developments are very politically motivated and target taking of control of the Bank. Yunus last week clearly stated a smooth transition from his post but this was not enough to cool down political turbulence although some inside sources argue two-week waiting time indicates a big crack in the ruling party. The main opposition party decided to support non-partisan bodies in organizing protests. On March 8, people lined up on the sidewalks in Mirpur 2 and formed human chain to show their support for Yunus.

While Yunus waits for two weeks for the court, there will be another meet-up in front of the National Museum on March, the 18th. The Location of the museum is important as it is close to both Dhaka University and Supreme Court. The attendance is expected to be high.
